Hi friend,
Today I’ll talk about the importance of putting yourself out there.
I have two wins to share with you:
I was invited to speak at SRCC in Delhi University this week, which is one of the top unis in the country
At the time you receive this newsletter, I’ll be giving a 20-minute talk in Google Women Tech Makers
Do pray for a second that it goes well.
While the event at SRCC had a panel and other people I shared the stage with, this will be all alone.
Even the thought of it is scary.
In my boarding school, public speaking was compulsory.
And your friend here would jitter so much in front of people. So much so that even though my school was in the southern Himalayan hills, I would feel sweat trickle down my back as I approached the podium.
This was followed by a lot of stammering and mispronunciations, because of nervousness.
I still sometimes stammer in my YouTube videos because I’m thinking fast and I try to match my speech to my thoughts, which isn’t the way to go about it.
I talk like I’m in a rush.
And I hope that doesn’t come up during the talk on Sunday.
When you put yourself out there, you attract opportunities.
I’m friends with some popular names online. I’ve even met some in real life. And this isn’t to brag because I’m socially awkward and not good at cold outreach, but I tell you this because even as an introvert, it’s easier to put yourself out there compared to reaching out to people.
Say you enjoy pottery.
You join more workshops.
You display your work with pride.
You gift some to your close ones and they talk about you.
The chance of somebody else ever reaching out to you for work, or just to tell you you’re amazing, is higher by doing this than doing nothing at all.
Momentum helps you push forward without pressure when it’s something you enjoy. Movement helps you get lucky more often because you realise you have the power to at least increase the surface area of your luck.
How do you be in the right place at the right time if you never show up?
You cannot.
I hope this encourages you to make that change, because you, yes you, have an entire universe inside you which has so much for the world.
